About

Julian Brower

Julian Brower is an artist based near Oxford, UK. He works in many mediums, styles and subjects. He has lived in several countries and travelled the world throughout his life from Sumatra to Shanghai, Borneo to Belize, the Falkland Islands to Faro. His subjects reflect the wide range of places he and his family have lived and visited. He is inspired by the sea from his days in the Merchant Navy but equally by the Rock of Gibraltar where he lived for 4 years, each returning visit to the Rock inspiring him to paint another view. Julian always heads for the sea at every opportunity to paint.

Julian formally studied art at school, however a long career spanning many fields of work meant he had to wait until he had more time to spend painting the many scenes that inspired him most. As a keen photographer, he has built up a personal library of over 120,000 images spanning 30 years, which he uses as reference material within his many works.

Julian paints in oils and acrylics on canvas and board, and when travelling, he always carries his bag of soft pastels and a sketch pad, often developing a painting. More recently he studied art under Mariana Acevedo, who taught him to relax and paint from the heart in many mediums including charcoal, ink, acrylic and water colours. Julian is inspired by colour and the form of nature, and more recently utilised this in his impressionist work. He loves the pallet knife and often uses more than one medium in a painting.

It is sometimes surprising that someone covers such a broad range of materials and subjects while bringing an endless energy and enthusiasm to their work. Julian has no favourite colour and no favourite brush. He loves using them all, at different times. ‘If I feel it, it’s art, otherwise it’s illustration and I’m quite happy to admit to doing both, depending on my mood’.

Julian paints most days and will be promoting his work on this website for all to enjoy and buy. He encourages you to make contact if you want a particular work or commission.
